Hey lads sorry to hear of the poor turn out. The earlier time has got to be something to do with it? I only just noticed 9am! I can tell you living over 10 miles away in porthcawl means leaving the house at 8.30 on a sunday morning and tbh honest when the weather gets colder and more dangerous you dont want to be leaving your house before 9.30 Rhys

I think half the reason is most people seem to think the club run will end up in eweny cafe and most lads i speak to are sick of that place and "the lanes".. |

The early start has stopped me and Dia coming on the club run. It is the wrong time of year to try the earlier start it means I need to leave my house at 10 past 8 and Sunday just gone everything was frozen at that time of the morning. Can't we change the times to 10 in the winter and 9 in the summer

Apologies Andy,
I was not there because I was at the South Wales VTTA AGM At Resolven (I did Ride up though if that counts). I have been there on the last two Saturdays and I will be there for the rest of the trial..... "Promise" As someone who works in the clubs and pubs on a Saturday night, I too would prefer a late start however I had no difficulty in riding to the plaza by 9:00 (And I'm a LOT LOT LOT slower than you Rhys so MAN UP LOL. Also apologies to Gareth as I forgot about the problem of frost Coming from the Tropics.... In all seriousness though this is a great debate, with lots of constructive comments (And I really mean it I am not being sarcastic). The thing I think it shows is that clearly the AGM was not reflective of your thoughts. This means a number of things. 1. We really need more of an input at these events if we are to take on board your thoughts, This being the case can we all make an effort to attend next year. 2. Charles We really need you re join the club so you can make these very valid points at the AGM and help us make the right decisions on behalf of the membership. 3. Come on Guys, cards on the table, Is it ending up at Ewenny that is the issue or is it that there is an element that wont come on the rides because they don't want a kicking. Should Club runs be at the speed of the slowest rider etc. or are we happy the way it is. 4. Whilst on the subject, I was talking to Sweep on the way back from Resolven yesterday he mentioned club runs of yesteryear going to "places of interest" rather than becoming just another training run for those who want to rack up a lot of miles in a group. Do you want us to do things slightly differently and even advertise where we are going prior to the event. 5. As per Rhys' previous thread, should we have 2 rides one for the younger guys one for the older guys, (or faster /slower) with a bit of thought I'm sure we could plan it and even maybe arrange to all meet at whatever destination These are just some thoughts, so in defference to my college days Discuss........... |

People who are not club members should not be passing comments, on this or any other subject!. Club rides should be advertised at least the week previous to the ride ,as is the norm with most other clubs, . when i was a lad, the clubrun would be on the Beacons at 8 am, cum rain or shine , but that was a very long time ago!, these days people have different priorities , and i am guessing it will be impossible for everyone to come to an agreement on time and venue,

Good points Les.
My thoughts: The days of a 20 strong club run are gone and won't be recaptured I suspect. From my point of view I am reluctant to go on the club run these days because everytime I have gone it follows the same format - a bowl through some local lanes, a stop at Ewenny and then home. Last week being a case in point. Glorious day, freakishly high temperatures and the only concession to adventure was the mini Bwlch. Ways you could improve that are by publishing the route in the week before. In this day and age of google maps, mapmyride and this forum there is no real reason not to. Dunno - what does everyone else think? _______________ The Force is strong in this one... |

I agree with les' and dave's previous messages.
I think the major factor we have to deal with is the massive gulf in standard between the younger and older riders. I'm sure everybody wants what is best for the club as a whole hence why I stated starting a more elite style training ride as an alternative. To be fair the usual ride caters well for 80% of club members, but it's not going to work with the other 10-20% who have ambitions of racing at a good level. What I dont want to see is younger riders wasting their time rolling along at 12mph being told to slow down when we can arrange something far more suitable. I'm sure most would agree...? ways to improve would be just what dave has stated, publishing details of both rides giving people the option. Rhys _______________ sleep is for the weak |

I second that, deffinatly need to post the route on here during the week, on the subject of club runs of yesteryear, when there was a much better turnout, back in the day the saturday ride was a short sharpe blast/jolly to porthcawl, where as these days its much longer harder etc, and with most riders only wanting 1 bigish ride per weekedn most seem to be going for the saturday, where as before in the past as the sat ride was not so substancial alot of riders geared up for the sunday?.... working saturdays i find this a problem but not every one works saturdays and lot of people like to put a sunday aside for family time, so yes it is a dilema, as the saturday ride is so well turned out it would be stupied changing it, but as les and i have been chating about take a simular concept for the sunday.. les mentioned start the ride posible at 9.30 but the route would of been decided the club night 2 weeks previuos so its not too short notice decided the club night the friday before , load up two maps one fast group one club run group both aiming to arrive at the same destination at same times then all ride back on the same route in either 1 large group or 2 groups as started... admitaly this will take time up of someone to organize but with the moral of the club benifitng it will be a satifying job to take on |

hi guys, glad i possted by quick rant its had some terriffic replys & suggestions. the main one seeming to be posting the ride before hand so everyone can look forward to potentially some cracking rides. you right charles it was a cracking ride & realy enjoyed. i rode back through penclawdd with striker so he could shoot straight over to the bont, then down to mumbles for another quick cuppa 82mls covered & still home by 2.30.

Good shout Rhys. We need something to cater to the faster riders and young up and coming members. Hopefully the new 'Elite' training ride will do that. If we publish the routes the club run can meet it or set off earlier etc. _______________ The Force is strong in this one... |

Some excellent thoughts on here guys, Heres the thing. In the AGM we said the trial should last two months. Having had this response, is there any point?
What is the chance of all contributers / interested parties popping down the club on Friday to have a chat purely about Sunday club runs and the options we would like to adopt. Any takers |

I had a nice ride with John Williams a few weeks back. He would be good for those wishing to go slower. I found his pace good for me especially after a hard ride on a saturday morning. Could we ask John if hes willing to organise a slower ride for sunday.
I like the idea of the Elite riders by Rhys. That would be excellent for those racing or wishing a damn good workout. |

sorry to join in this one late. But to add my two penneth. I haven't been on any irde as they start too late. Married with kids ( Iknow, so are many) but 9 a.m start is about 2 hours into my ride. Ok so now the winter is comming, I'll be out a little later, but still aime to be out for sun up. otherwise to do 50 miles starting at 10 a.m just means I'm not finished untill12,30 1, most of the sunday is gone. I am looking to do some racing next year, so i'd really love to get out on somw fast rides( even if it's just to see how long I can hang on for). ANy way, that's my thoughts and I've always been a morning person.

I thought the sunday rides went in diferent directions??!! John Williams does interesting rides but a lot slower than the elite bunch!! Its all according to what you want to get out of cycling. We are a racing club not a CTC club. I'm debating whether to continue with a racing bike tbh. I dont get any kicks from it like I used to, only KICKINGS lmao!!
