Right here's the situation - from the No1 Bond fan of all time - me.
It was excellent, been to see it twice already. A true return to the source material after the ridiculous 'invisible car' and 'space laser' of the last film. The gadgets have always strangled the series, and as much as they are a 'trademark' they are also a clumsy millstone dragging down the credibility of the film. Finally we have a beliable Bond, the way Flemming intended, a cold, hard killer. Daniel Craig nails it. You believe this man could kill.
There are no gadgets because that is how Flemming intended. Of late the series has become a paradoy of its self, reverting to the unbelievable spoofs of the Roger Moore era. We are given a 'Dr No/From Russia with Love style' Bond film, and the experience is all the better for it - a genuine spy thriller, and a chance to learn more about one of the greatest fictional characters of te 20th Century.
We are shown how Bond the man developed, and finally given a 'character' rather than a fully developed character to slot into OTT situations. This Bond relies on his wits, makes mistakes, bleeds, but learns from this and slowly becomes 'Bond...James Bond', as confirmed in the closing sequence.
In short - I loved it, it is Bond the way I have always wanted to see him. If you want gadgets and silly one-liners, go see Johnny English or Spy Kids.
