Having being knocked off my bike a few weeks ago by a motorist on a Dual Carriageway!I have been thinking of using a rear light on Time Trials.Any views on this from fellow Time Triallists?

In day light, if a motorist can't see a big lump on a bike, is he ( or her ) going to notice a small light !!!

Fancy calling Peter "a big lump", tut tut.
If it makes you feel safer Peter then go for it. And yes, a small flashing light will only make you MORE visible and can't make you LESS visible. At the end of the day it's personal choice and as long as there is no compulsion from governing bodies then why not? _______________ "The most important thing in life is not to have the most, but to need the least.” Plato (my favourite Disney character). |

I started to write this with tongue in cheek but in reflection in this day and age, maybe it's not so silly ...
How about allowing trailing vehicles ? A couple of years ago when I was timing a club event, only one rider decided to ride in the VERY heavy rain. Fearing for his safety I followed him for the whole ten miles. I was certainly happier knowing I was protecting him from the obvious dangers . _______________ Supporting the club that supports you |

The current Advice from CTT which was sent to me for inclusion on the start sheet of the event I am organising is
"It Is recommendd that a working Rear light either flashing or constant is fitted to the machine in a position visible to following road users and is active while the machine is in use" |

personally I have ridden a few time trials with flashing rear light. It's cheap and they last forever, and there's always a chance it will punch through a driver's blindspot. Not much of one, but there's always a chance. After all there is no other vehicle on the road that has that LED-ey flashy red light thing. As soon as a motorist sees one they instantly think 'cyclist'.
The worst conditions are low sun up front, and in such conditions I normally get as far out of the way as possible, crossing the white line and riding to the left of it. It may cost me a few seconds as I ride on dirty concrete, but that's the price you pay to be safe(r). Oh yeah, and I gave up any prospect of having street cred when I was 8 ![]() _______________ Electric bikes are great. They give ordinary people the chance to know what it feels like to be me. |
