I've done a few TTs on our course (inc back road course) on a fixed lo-pro and found 90 inch to be a happy medium. That's about 50x15. I am by no means a 'big gear' guy either so would be a good starting point I think. _______________ The Force is strong in this one...

I only ever did one club 10 on fixed using 45x14 (87" and was just a bit spun out so Davey's advice sounds good. Great fun but I always a bit nervous using a frame with horizontal drop outs as I'd previously had the chain jump off coming down Stormy and had the rear wheel jam-up in a nano-second and the rear wheel burn through to the inner tube one nano-second after that... As Davey says 50x15 is a good starting point, i would also go for some spare chainrings say 51tooth also a 52tooth , and these combined with the 15 sprocket , should give you a good range especially if you are not a pedalling demon. I assume you are using a proper track bike i.e. with adjustable fork ends with which you can accomodate the range of gears mentioned without shortening or lengthening the chain

Thanks for your help guys.
pip, its not a "proper" track bike but it does have horizontal dropouts, so therefore i am able to adjust the chain tension.
I have an old (80s) campag chainset (double), could i remove the inner chainring and buy shorter bolts to enable me to use the large ring only for single speed use? or would this be a problem as the chainring teeth are "ramped"?
Also, as i only require a front brake, any advice on bars/brake lever/stems?
Im thinking of low pro bars with a reverse action lever. _______________ Carpe Diem.

You'll probably get a better chainline with your chainring on the inside but, my god, it looks fugly.
One combination that worked for me was a Campag Chorus BB with an old RX100 chainset with the chainring was on the outside. ixie, that is a proper track bike, with regards the chainset ,you may get trouble with the chain alignment, but before going to the expense of buying a new one i,d try it first, and see how it runs, on my fixed bike ,it has a double chaiset with the inner ring removed and single bolts, and the original double axle, no trouble with alignment, but as i say try it first, you will soon know as the chain will come off!

Thanks pip, thats exactly what i was getting at. i will give it a try.
The reason i said its not a proper track bike is due to it having a normal wheelbase, front&rear brake mounts (im only running a front), and the frame has standard road geometry, its nothing flash, just a standard steel frame that ive been using as a winter hack/commuter. ive been running it with a 39x15 (to get me up stormy/three steps) and riding between cornelly& work at swansea.
Just thought id try turning it into a tt bike and having my first bash at the clubs tts.
Thanks again for all your help.
