Two members of the squadra took a chance with the weather last night and journeyed to the Wild West for the 2/3/4 Pembrey circuit race, namely James 'Tank' Lewis and Dave 'Disco' Crowley.
Things were off to a bad start when James realised he had forgotten half his kit as we were getting changed, and most importantly he only had one shoe. Half an acre of insulation tape and one dap later James thought he had stumbled on a workable solution. The rest of us were not so impressed. Sensing this he managed to borrow a shoe from someone else and fashion sense aside, he was ready to go.
From the off the attacks came hard and fast, with both squadra members involved. However, about 4 laps in a move went with Anthony O'Boyle and Ben Simmons which James jumped across to. I tried to go, but for some reason my legs were dead tonight and I could see that I was dragging the bunch up to James so I sat up. A few more went round me to try and get on, but the three up front lifted it again and spat them out. With those boys clear and cearly fighting it out for the win the rest of us settled down for the rest of the race.
In the bunch John fitzpatrick (Abergavenny) and I tried to get away a couple of times, but my dead legs meant that once we were away I just died a thousand deaths and couldn't sustain it. This occurred most notably on the last lap, and I wasn't able to recover in time for the bunch sprint (which was won by an in form Steve Thomas) and just about squeezed into the top ten, a poor show.
Up ahead James was jumped by Ben Simmons (Wiggle) who won his second Pembrey. Great ride by James who was clearly riding very strong, only losing out to the more experienced Ben who used his knowledge to outfox him. Lessons learnt by James and a win can't be far away!
Til next time...
