Well done to the squarda chrono today - on that really flat, fast course!!!!
I think next years event is being re-named "l'etape de tour"
Seriously though, the race from the car went something like this..
Jayson out of the starting blocks like Boonen in roubaix, Les, cool calm and collected settled down to the effort ahead. First time check - 20 mile, Jayson 3 minutes up and flying, but Les was looking calm and not troubled by the endless hills.
Both acended the 2.5 mile climb out of halfway as if it wasn't there and they were off to Brecon roundabout - 37 miles.
As I chomped on bacon buttee Les passed me, seemingly cruising through the 39 mile marker, but I found out later his poker face hid a different story. Jayson meanwhile was on a flyer, cruising through 39 miles a full 6 minutes up. Next check point 50 miles. Les went through 2 hrs 26 and Jayson 2 hrs 18. More food on board and both were off towards llandeilo in to a nasty head wind at times, and the 75 mile marker. At about 70 mile, it was evident Jayson was in a bit of trouble and I did my Mavic neutral support impersonation and delivered another bottle and 2 more gels to him, both of which went straight down the hatch. Les by this time, bloodied and bruised from the previous days escapades was turning it on, he'd pulled back a full 5 minutes at the 75 mile marker and didnt seem in any trouble - still able to get out of the saddle when the road went up. So on to the turn - 18miles to go with a tail wind. Les by now had pulled back another 2 minutes and Jayson, seemingly re-fuelled started to get second wind (or was it third or fourth of fifth!) By now, the race was truely on, the boys were neck and neck. Jayson really motoring - in and out of the saddle, caught and passed 2 more on the road ahead, and Les obviously suffering from a bit of cramp by now continued to munch up the road ahead. No more time checks from here on in, they were on they're own. I motored to the finish just in time to catch Les' time and then waited for Jayson. Tudor Thomas jested it would be close! and when he saw Jayson come around the final bend he could'nt call it - too close. In the end, there was just 6 seconds in it and PB's done by both.
Back at the HQ, a seemigly refreshed Les said he'd thoroughly enjoyed it and that he'd started cramping up at about 40 mile - awesome effort! Jayson was happy with his ride and pondered what lay ahead in 3 weeks time - 2.5 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and a marathon - Iron man Germany !!!!
Good ride guys on a really tough course.
Nothing like a 250mile round trip with 100mile of pain in the middle - sounds like a typical Sunday for the Squadra chrono!!!!
