need some advice or suggestions from the more technically minded wheelers out there. I am looking for a new set of wheels after I ripped a spoke out of my Kysrium elite rear wheel a fortnight ago.
Been looking at the mavic open pro rims and am thinking about going to the traditional 32spoke handbuilt wheels. Read a few reviews on wheel on the net and some say the mavic open pro rims are good for riders upto 85kg - me being a fat ba##@*d at 100kgs would they be ok.
Any advice gents?

Dai,
I bought a set of these rims for Rhys for when he rode the Junior Paris-Roubiux. Vernon built up them up and they are awesome. I use them a lot now and I am a big fat Bast%%d.

85kg? Someone's having a laugh! I can't fault your choice of rims and 32 spokes is plenty.

We're well blessed with wheelbuilders in the club aren't we? My last pair of hand-builts were a pair of Dave Hinde Open Pro's on Centaur hubs but they must have been made by Dave Hinde's wife or mother (no offence Mrs. Hinde) as they were useless and went out of true the very first time I rode on them. Gerald Crook trued them up and they got me through my Super Randonneur series and Paris-Brest-Paris without ever seeing a spoke key again.

To be fair, I found Ksyrium Elites to be bullet-proof and I'm surprised you've ripped a spoke out. It must be all the power you're producing!

Alfie - you are not alone in finding Dave Hinde less than impressive - check out these testimonials:

Thanks gents. Not sure its the power i'm generating Alf, may have been in wrong gear going up Sarn hill - think I'll plump for the mavic open pro rims as they are not too expensive .
What about hubs - was thinking about ultegra - need something compatible with shimano 9 speed.

I'm not a Shimano man but feel that Ultegra will be fine, why pay more?

If you're stuck Dai I can lend you a pair of Shimano wheels until you have new ones built but they really need a 25mm or 28mm tyre as they are more of a touring rim (Mavic A319's on Ultegra hubs).

Edit; Just checked and they need 28mm
