Can't agree with you there Paul. Two weeks on a bike means nothing especially if you want to go out on a club run,the club run averages between 12-15 m.p.h and if a person is struggling to stay on after 3 miles, then it suggests to me that they need to do a few more miles in between, turn up for the club ride and go a few miles further every week, hence my opening line, DON'T LOOSE HEART LES,etc, etc, the club and all it's members don't wish to alienate or discourage any new or potential members by seeming to be elitist, but I think any new or potential member owes it to themselves and the club to have a certain fitness level. So to any cyclists out there reading this, as was told to me by someone who will remain nameless "if you haven't had a kicking, you haven't tried" and I'll say it again Les stick at it!

Hi Guys I there seems to be lots of discussion about fat boys going on club runs so I thought I add another note which hopefully will clarify my point, avoid any consternation and continue what is an interesting debate. If you look really carefully you'll notice that My comment was in response to the opening quote from Jeff who said, "spoke to someone to day wont go on club run because it states on information page 20mph can this be put right. can name if required". Now rightly or wrongly This suggested to me that the person in question would like to ride on a Sunday but is concerned whether he/she can't ride at the pace of the fit guys. If this is the case, then this is the kind of person I could probably ride with as they would not get bored stupid riding with a slow old fart like me who at 17 stone is having a bit of an argument with Isaac Newton and his "Gravity". I also thought that as its February that there may be others in a similar positition who need to get the miles in but at a slower pace than the likes of JD, Spot, Griff and co. (Apologies to the faster, fitter, younger and prettier guys that I don't know yet) Simon is dead right when he said that the boys slowed for me and also, that It was me who said for them to leave me on my own as it would not do me or them any good. I didn't need a push, (James Lewis did offer) and no one needed to stop and give me encouragement. The fact of the matter is that the boys were comfortable at that speed I was not. I am however quite happy to get the miles in and continued the day on my own going around Ogmore and Southerndown (computer he say 12.7MPH ave speed for day) before going home. I think I also need to point out that for those who don't know me I used to race as a kid and whilst its nice to be called a"Newbie" and I like the thought of nurturing my Willy (I may have got that bit wrong) I do know what its like to take a kicking and how to dish them out (I Think Griff will confirm that), I also know the importance of getting the miles in "In between". I'm not so sure that anyone owes it to the club to have a certain level of fitness. Although after week three of owning my bike I have now done 359 miles (not much but it's start) So to get back to my first point, in the way it was meant, HI Guys my name is Les Thomas and I'm back on the bike after a twenty year lay off. I'm about 5 stone heavier than I need to be and can ride all day but slowly. Any not so fit guys fancy a bike ride on a sunday morning as I can't make the soft riders cafe outing on Saturdays PS I've ridden from Porthcawl to the Club for the last two Fridays and will be there again on Friday. If you want you can meet me there to make arrangements. |

Hi, Les. Sorry to cause any offence (none intended),my comments were only in answer to No-legs'(who doesn't cycle at all) statement about the ride going to the pace of the slowest rider.I didn't know you had a history in cycling and I'm glad to hear your making a come back, my first post was one of encouragement but reading the line about you doing 359 miles in 3 weeks, any chance of a line of encouragement from you, coz thats about 300 miles more than me. oh dark days!

Well done for sticking at it Les, console yourself Les, in the fact that just over a year ago Tud was 20 stone, so at 17 st. you are a lightweight|

I may be a lightweight compared to Tud's come back, but Isaac Newton and his apples have got it in for me and I'm sure gravity is affecting me more than it affected him. Anyway, I'm off for a couple of days and going out on me bike right now as I've got lots of catching up to do...................See ya

Hi Les, welcome to the club. I'm not riding or a member at present so may not qualify to comment lol.
Anyhoo, I mentioned John Williams as he goes at a pace possibly more suitable to you. "willy" is a nickname referred to for John. Keep it up mate ![]() |
