Any feedback would be appreciated. I'm thinking of giving them a go for Audax type rides.

I only use SPD's. They are much better for walking around in, although I guess you should be cycling, not walking !
I find it easier to locate my pedal, as it doesn't matter which way up the pedal is to click in.
The only problem there may be with the distance rides, is the pressure on the bottom of the foot. I think perhaps the area is smaller and therefore more concentrated with SPD's. Could result in 'hot foot' - Had that when doing my first and only 100, and it's not pleasant.
There endeth my SPD expereince :D

I'm really thinking about MTB SPD's here and not road SPD's. The smaller area could be a big problem for me as I've had 'hot foot' type pain in the long distance rides (600km and 1200km) but, you never know, the pressure point could be in a totally different place. There's a lot of walking around at some control points and LOOK's aren't the greatest things to be on although on the bike "they're great" (copyright - Tony the Tiger).

Used to use MTB SPDs on my road bike a long time ago, certainly more flexible and alot more float. Alos the shoes are better for walking around in, and tend to be more forgiving soles. I would say you lose a bit in power transferance, but think that only matters if you are RRing.

For the time being I'm sticking with LOOK and I've bought some low-end Specialized shoes to see how I get on with them. I might give MTB SPD's and shoes a go when I start audaxing again, probably next Spring.

The only advantage I find with MTB spd's is you can wear shoes that you can walk in aswell. Ideal for audax riding Alf. Look are better for road riding.

Used spuds for a few years on throad , had one pair of touring shoes and one pair of leasure/race shoes.Done a few long road rides on both never had any foot problems, the flex in the the touring shoes soles helped with circulation, something that might contribute to hot spots.I've got a pair of size 10's in both shoes and a spare pair of pedals if you want to try before you buy. Another optoin is lidl for shoes they have them in atleast twice a year.
