I did them in that order yesterday and in reverse today just for good measure and it's quite surprising how different they are. So, in your opinion, which one is worse? (Or best)
1. Bwlch from the Afan Valley side.
2. Bwlch from the Rhondda side.
3. Rhigos from the Rhonnda side.
4. Rhigos from the Hirwaun side.
For me, it's Rhigos from the Hirwaun side. The approach is so long and you're staring up at it without seeing how the road can possibly get over it! It's also surprising how low your need to gear down on this approach bit whilst keeping a couple of cogs in reserve . _______________ "The most important thing in life is not to have the most, but to need the least.” Plato (my favourite Disney character).

Bwlch from the Rhondda side is a nightmare. The road is dead, you can see it stretching away into infinity and if you are heading to Afan, you have to deal with the soul crushing false summit where the ice cream van is, for all intents and purposes looking like the top, but in reality at least another mile to go! _______________ The Force is strong in this one...

Tell me about it, since the ACME stopped their club 10 we've been using this as our midweek hillclimb!!
Anyway, get over Maerdy Mountain from the Aberdare side, you wont have many gears in reserve there!

bwlch from the ogmore side is what i rate the hardest with that steep start from the monument i think this side is underated because it's probably the shortest but if you turn left at the top to drop down into the afan valley it becomes the longest and the wind it always tough over there. rhys
