Well, with almost a full week to go not even Derek Brockway can safely predict the weather but I can predict more back road shenanigans with our newish club '13' that we tested back in July 2019 (as an emergency course due to roadworks) and Rod Hicks took the win on that night with a 29:58 - a good benchmark for this return. I think the extra 3 miles of relatively flat road adds an interesting dynamic to our club event season as it gives riders who are disadvantaged on the Rock & Fountain an extra 3 miles to claw back time on their rivals.
Anyway, Tony and Shirley are in charge with help from Dai Triggs so I hope you enjoy yourselves on this non-standard oddity.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
START on the B4242 Old Vale of Neath Road at unused entrance just south-west of the new Health Centre in Glynneath. Proceed south-west on the B4242 to Resolven junction. Continue south-west on the B4242 passing through Abergarwed village and Ynysarwed village to the ‘Rock and Fountain’ hill, climb and continue to TURN with care at the break in the dual-carriageway opposite the Groundhog factory at Ynysgerwen, SA10 8HH (6.5 miles).
Descend hill and retrace route north-eastwards along the B4242 through Ynysarwed village and Abergarwed village. Continue north-eastwards through Resolven junction and past Rheola Pond to FINISH directly opposite the start.
The ride to the start is 3.2 miles or 15 mins at a 13mph plod.
