No not for me you silly beggars...

A work colleague is doing their first triathlon in July consisting of;

A 450m swim

A 25km cycle

A 5km run

And would appreciate some training advice. Please post here and I'll direct him to this thread.

Alf, tell them to look at pencoed tri website, It's got some good tips there. Silly questions, but can he swim? can he ride abike 25K can he run 5K? If he can do all these things then the training is a bit different to if he can't do one, or any.

The main thing with tri when you start out is to keep a balance of training for all three, whilst tring to build cardio fitness. If he just wants to complete it then doing aleast 1 session of each per week will be ok. A sprint tri should only take about 1-2 hours( depending on fitness). I'm no expert , but if he wants to e-mail me I can give them a few more tips if he wants. Advice sort of depends on how fit he is now really.

Hi Alfie, I've got a little bit of experience in this field. (3 Ironmans) I'd say the most important thing is to relax and enjoy the event. Attend the party afterwards if there is one, and don't wash your race number off your leg for a while so that you can bask in the glory (but only if you finish). Then look at your split times, and work out which is your weakest and plan to train more in that area. Join a Tri Club, if only for the Pool Sessions which will be better structured than just going on your own. (my misses is Club Sec of Celtic Tri, which is very friendly, for all abilities) Read the books and the magazines, for training advice but remember that it only works if it fits in with your work and family commitments. Ball Park volume of training across 3 disciples in my opinion 5hrs per week for Sprint, 10 for Olympic and 20+ for Ironman. Enjoy!
