Hi Guys
An Update on the accident during the Club 10 last night.
Peter Jones was hit by a car after about 2 miles on the club 10. He suffered severe lacerations to his left leg and abrasions to his back and arms.
Having spoken to Sheila this morning, Peter was kept in Morriston Hospital over night and is comfortable but there is a concern that he has broken is femur quite high on the leg and as a result there may be a need for a full hip replacement. Obviously it is still early days and we hope to know more later today.
I'm sure you'll all join me in wishing him a speedy recovery and I'll keep you updated as soon as I get to hear any more « Last edit by Les Thomas on Mon Jun 28, 2010 11:25 am. »

I'm a bit angry on his behalf because there's just no excuse for a motorist hitting a cyclist in broad daylight. There certainly wouldn't be any low sun 2 miles from Resolven. Visibility would have been clear as crystal.
Really sad to hear your season's over. Hope it doesn't come to hip replacement! Get well soon. _______________ Electric bikes are great. They give ordinary people the chance to know what it feels like to be me.

Hi Guys,
Just spoken to Peter and unfortunately they are looking to carry out a hip replacement next week.
From what I understand his femur is broken near the pelvis and they reckon pinning it will only give a 50 / 50 chance of success. This being the case they are looking to carry out a hip replacement to have any chance of success.
Recuperation from this is going to be longer than hoped and Peter's Initial thoughts are he is likely to be in hospital another couple of weeks however, obviously this will be firmed up as time progresses.

Seriously upsetting news!, best wishes Peter, from myself and the family. Does anyone else think that this accident (peter's 2nd in as many months), should be taken up by our press officer and reported to the local rag, if only to make drivers aware, that there are cyclists using the A465 legally for racing and recreational purposes and that driving without due care and attention comes with serious repercussions and also "when over taking a cyclist, you should afford them as much room as when over taking any other road vehicle", plus bringing this accident to the attention of the public, could prevent it and any other future accident (may your god forbid) from being swept under the carpet as easily as previous incidents. Anyway, get well soon Peter!.

I agree that RTAs shoudl be reproted and that we woudl benefit from more publicity, save we don't want to paint cycling as an 'extreme sport' with high chance of getting knocked off! _______________ The Force is strong in this one... « Last edit by Davey C on Mon Jun 28, 2010 12:51 pm. »

Davey C wrote I agree chester, save we don't want to paint cycling as an 'extreme sport' with high chance of getting knocked off! Who's our press officer these days?
When I'm not organising Open events, carrying out my duties as the Club Events Secretary, admin duties on this very forum you are avidly reading and serving the South Wales DC then I guess it's me.
However, I won't be taking up Chester's obviously well-intentioned but misguided recommendation. I'd like to expand upon this further but paragraph 4 (below) applies.
My opinion is that we should allow the governing body of this particular arm of our sport to fight this battle for us. My suggestion is to allow the committee to get together and discuss this serious incident and, indeed, the future of PTW club events properly.
Could I politely remind club members that for, hopefully, very obvious legal reasons we need to be careful about what we discuss on this forum about what has happened to Peter. We all know it's wrong and we're all angry but, for the moment, please let's do things by the book and by the numbers. Thank you. _______________ "The most important thing in life is not to have the most, but to need the least.” Plato (my favourite Disney character).

Whilst I am sure we are all supportive of the general idea that we need to raise awareness of our activities in the hope that this will avoid future accidents, I am not sure that reporting on this or any individual incidents is wise. Especially at this stage where police investigations and or any civil actions are at such an early stage.
Dave Crowley is probably best served to advise on this but I feel there are two primary issues reporting of incidents.
1. We need to be careful not to say anything that could predjudice any future action for the individuals involved and
2. All Time trials or Road races (including club events) are run on behalf of the CTT and British Cycling respectively. They are not run on behalf of the club and therefore anything we report following such an incident would need to be approved by the governing body.
This being the case, despite everyones best intentions, can I respectfully ask that we limit this thread to wellwishers and updates on Peters health. Rather than debates which could lead to unconsidered reactions being aired.
Incidentally having visited Peter Yesterday, He was quite chirpy and they ae hopeful that the first operation to stabilise the wound on his left leg will happen over the next 24 hours.
Once that has been completed they will be looking at the hip replacement.
For Info Peter is on Ward A

I wasn,t expecting any speculative reporting, just thought we could have given the ball to the local rag and see if THEY wanted to run with it. I was only quoting from the highway code and not once did I speculate on what happened to Peter. Thats just my opinion. Barrack room lawyers, don't you just f*%^ing luv um!
