The Squadra were back out in force last night at round 3 of the Maindy Circuit races. With James leading the overall and with the chance of a hat trick of wins he would need his trusty super domestique Davy ‘Disco’ C to assist. However, ‘Tank’ had less than ideal prep for this event, having spent the last 7 days boozing it up from Swansea to Switzerland and not was carrying a heavy cold.
The usual contingent of strong riders were here, with a few additions, namely in the form of James Norman, last years champion. From the word go, the pace was hot. Disco got in a few breaks but nothing was going, and when James attacked it was amusing to hear the cries of ‘hup hup!’, clearly he is now a marked man.
I was happy in my role as George Hancapie to Tank’s Cavendish and tried to bring back anything that looked dangerous. The attacks were relentlessly coming from the likes of Ben Simons and Rob Powell (Ogmore), no sooner had one gone than another would go. The pace was too much for half the field and by the time the bell rang for 5 laps to go we were down to 10-11 riders from a bunch of 30.
With 2 laps to go I found myself on the front, and after checking Tank had my wheel, I started ramping it up for the leadout. With a lap to go, I was dying but I struggled on. Approaching 150 to go Tom Ashford jumped from behind Tank and I swung off to let him do his thing. Unfortunately the cold, the travelling or the booze got the better of Tank and he couldn’t quite unleash his usual kick, with Ashford (Ajax) piping him on the line.
Nevermind, Tank’s lead is sewn up and he rode well considering. Another dominant performance by the PTWCC. Roll on next week for the final round…
